Garrett Slater
Minister of College and Adult Education
Garrett came to know Jesus at a young age through the ministry of a local Southern Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. He was raised in a Christian home and was active in church as a child where his faith was encouraged. Upon entering college at OU to study music education, several events led Garrett out of church community. Upon completing his undergraduate degree at OU he reengaged with a local church in south Oklahoma City and felt a call to ministry. Realizing that he had missed much spiritual growth during his college days, Garrett wants students to actively seek the Lord and not miss out on what God has for them.
Garrett desires to see all people encounter God and know Him as their Lord and savior, to develop into disciples who make disciples, and make His name known throughout the whole earth.
Garrett is very happy to be serving the Lord through the ministries of Bethel Baptist Church and living in the Norman community. His wife Jennifer is a lecturer at the University of Oklahoma and is active in several college student groups as a faculty sponsor and supporter. Both Garrett and Jennifer have hearts for the Lord and hearts for college students.
Garrett’s education background includes a B.A. in Multidisciplinary studies from the University of Oklahoma, and a Masters of Divinity in Christian Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Garrett enjoys cooking, reading, gardening, and spending time with Jennifer watching OU football or attending classical music concerts.
Favorite books include: The Cross of Christ, by John Stott, Justification by N.T. Wright, and Conformed to His Image by Kenneth Boa. Agatha Christie is also a favorite author of murder mysteries.
Three scripture passages that resonate with Garrett are:
Jeremiah 29:13
You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart.
Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
Romans 11: 33-36
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor? Or who has given a gift to Him that he might be repaid? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen
